How to Clean Antique Christening Gowns, Vintage Lace and Delicate Fabric

July 24, 2026 · Twin Pines

An antique christening gown, a piece of foxed lace, a great-grandmother’s quilt — these are the fabrics you cannot replace and cannot toss in the washing machine. Age stains, yellowing and old spots make them look fragile and tired. The good news: most of it comes out, if you clean them the gentle way.

Why old fabric yellows and stains

Vintage fabric yellows for a few reasons: oxidation of the fibers, old starch and body oils that darken over time, and storage in acidic paper or wood. Brown spots (“foxing”) are usually oxidation or mildew. Because the fibers are weak, harsh cleaning does more harm than the stain.

The rules of cleaning delicate fabric

  • Cold water only. Heat sets stains and can shrink or weaken old fibers.
  • No chlorine bleach. It eats weak fibers and can turn white fabric permanently yellow.
  • No wringing or twisting. Support the wet fabric — it is heavy and tears easily when saturated.
  • Test colorfastness. Dab a hidden seam or hem first to be sure colors and trim will not bleed.

Step by step

  1. Remove delicate trim. Ric-rac, velvet and glued-on details should come off or be handled separately — soaking can loosen glue and crush pile.
  2. Mix a cold-water bath. Dilute your fabric cleaner in cold water per its directions.
  3. Soak. Immerse the piece and let it sit, agitating gently now and then. Give stains time — an hour or more.
  4. Rinse in cold water. To neutralize any residue, dip in a mild vinegar-and-water bath, then rinse again.
  5. Dry flat. Roll in a towel to blot — do not wring — then lay flat to dry, away from direct sun.

For stubborn stains and browning

Sometimes a soak is not enough for deep yellowing or old brown stains. Instead of reaching for bleach, add a non-bleach booster. It brightens whites and lifts browned areas without attacking the fibers.
